如果你是英國公民，不論你的英籍是如何取得，你的子女在英國出生後便會自動獲得英籍。
如果你的子女是在英國境外出生，他們自動獲得英籍與否，將取決於你獲得英籍的方式。
居英權計劃
九十年代初，英國政府曾推出居英權計劃，當時大約有五萬名香港人透過此計劃註冊成為英籍公民，他們的身份為居英權第一代，而他們的子女則為居英權二代。
自動獲得公民身份
如果你是居英權二代，你的子女在英國出生後將自動獲得英籍。
註冊成為英國公民 (英國境外申請)
如果你是居英權二代，而你的子女在英國境外出生，他們是否能自動獲得英籍主要需考慮以下三項因素：
- 你出生時你的父或母是否已持有英籍
- 你在子女出生時是否已持有英籍
- 你是否在子女出生前曾在英國居住了三年，且在這段期間內總共沒有離開英國超過270天，並能提供相關的住址證明
如果達到以上三項要求，可直接為英國境外出生的子女申請註冊成為英國公民。
註冊成為英國公民 (英國境內申請)
如果你未能達到以上三項要求，即上一代在你出生時未持有英籍，或在子女出生前未曾在英國居住三年，那麼你的子女只能在你們一家（你、配偶、子女）在英國居住滿三年後，並在這三年期間，每位總共未離開英國超過270天的情況下，才能在第三年為子女申請註冊成為英國公民。
